On The Run at Sunrise?

Always on the run?

Always worried things are catching up to you and you have to run faster.

Early morning we start out on a slow pace...

Looking around and taking in our surroundings.

The sun has broken through with morning light and we are newly awakened to the day.

We begin our day and seem to fall right in line behind others, following their path and their way.

It may not even be the direction we are suppose to be traveling, but it seems safe, others are doing it too. We stay sheltered and hidden in the shadows hoping no one will single us out.

COMFORT in HIM

Life moves forward around us every single second. Those seconds make minutes and those add up to days, months and years. Moments can be filled with joy or sorrow, peace or chaos, but through it all despite discontentment or circumstance I must trust that God's hand is in everything. I have to turn to Him.

Truly making a day would be impossible with out His presence in our lives. Some days are harder than others when the situations involve those I love and I feel so helpless to meeting their needs. I have to remind myself, only God can meet those needs not me. In the depths of 'hell' the only source for good and light is the Father.

You will find if you can get to that place of relying on Him you will have balance in the moment and regain your ground. This works through times of discord and despair.

God brings harmony if you are listening and waiting on Him and through this you will find peace.

I wanted to post one of my signature painted pony pulls. It is always a compliment to have another artist try to imitate my work. I developed this style back in 2006 after a show in NY with the Five Graces. If you know me well, you know the story behind it. The original first pony pull (aka the nude on 30 x 40 canvas) was purchased by a gallery owner in the UK. He continues to buy more from art from me and several of my other abstract styles with drip technique and glazed layerings. He wishes today he had not sold the original in his gallery, but had kept it for his personal collection. Neither he nor I would know that it would become so highly collected.

You can follow stories and current interviews of my work in the upcoming July issue of Appaloosa Journal, the June issue as a featured artist in Western Art Collector, and in the June issue of Cowboys & Indians with the Artists of Texas.

This summer one of my Painted Pony Pulls will be featured in the Million Dollar Pfizer Hits on the Hudson with a Gallery opening August 7th in Woodstock NY at the Fletcher Gallery and then September 12th at the main event where the painting will be silent auctioned off to raise funds for horses.

The painting shown is a sold commission painting completed this week.

The Painting: Mountain Pony named for the deep caramel browns washing through the background and the horse. Holbein Duo Oils are so buttery that painting is a joy. The Painting: Rough scrapes of color prepare the base of this painting. Overlays of acrylic then create the vision of the horse. This one was painted in 2007. I may try to do one this week that retains this sense but in my current style. It is important that an artist explore and continue to learn and grow with in their journey. It is also important to be original. A sense of style is unique to each of us that paint, and often through either workshops or straight copy imitation, we see pieces of our own work showing up in the internet in the works of others.

The Painting: This was a rough ride of not doing what I wanted the painting to do. Two full scrapings and I finally let the spirit find it's way through and this is what resulted. This is a strong painting and the images are literally carved into the oils.

The Thought: There was a great thought here and it disappeared...how I do not know and time I am short of time today to rewrite an hour's worth of work! I do not want to try and recreate it in short order, so I simply leave you with a prayer for grace today. Love like you have never loved before. Take in sights you have missed everyday and give thanks to Him who created it all. Be blessed to be a blessing.

The Painting: I painted this in two days with layering. The first day was Saturday as I placed two layers of drippy acrylics. Then on Sunday I began working on two Arabian horses that just were not working on the canvas and I wiped over the surface with more colors. By Sunday afternoon I began to see what was evolving was a playful scene and the two ponies looked like escaped horses from a carousel. Hence the name. My mom named them. She was helping me cover paintings for my two NY gallery openings on Sunday and I was working on this composition. She always has a good comment to make. I am trying to encourage her to take some painting workshops with me. I have never taken any as I teach them... but it might be fun.

The Painting: I continue to experiment this summer using my acrylics more. With this high humidity it is almost impossible to get oils to dry. I have never 'loved' acrylics, but with the situation as it is, I am learning more about them and their flexibility compared to oils. I have about decided they are as different as night and day. This painting began with pinks, oranges and reds washed thickly over the background. From there the layering of acrylics creates a wash and drip effect and thickening of layers provides contrast in both color and texture.

The Painting: Frustration began this painting, but uniqueness finished it. I could not tell you the numbers of layers of paint on this one, but the weave of colors is unbelievable. There is no way for me to photograph what you actually see with this one. Liquetex Heavy Body Acrylics at their best. I am refraining from too many oils right now as the summer heat and humidity are so strong in Texas. 108 heat yesterday.

The Thought: Thaw Malin iii wrote on my Facebook yesterday. We are suppose to be on Vacation. Terry is spending it in front of his computer. I am a bit disappointed as it would have been nice to get away from this heat of 108. Thaw said there is a law that an artist paints better on vacation, so when there is a vacation...the artist must travel and paint. Not sure where it is written, so we have to call it the unwritten law of the artist.

The Painting: There is this feeling of coming together occasionally when you are working on a painting. The first step was a light watery layer of yellow acrylic. Then as that dried, a sketch of the positioning of the horse and then the colors begin to fall into place. Each one is applied with a knife pulling and contending against each other to find a position. There seems to come a time with art that it begins to be feeling and not intention. That is where I try to take my students, to the point where the inner child-like creativity oozes out controlled in slight limits by the knowledge base and principles of design and color. Within each composition lies areas of indisputable strength and might... and of course areas of the opposite of weakness and vulnerability.

A Painting A Day: This is the third in my light series of flowers. The beginnings of each of these are a study in values and light done in off shades of acrylic paint, totally different than final hues. This allows me to study the painting as I begin to pull in the oils by palette knife. First layer is a charcoal sketch blocking in the composition. Second layer is acrylic in blue, black, orange and white. Third, the final layer is oil pulled with the palette knife.

My Thought for the Day:

Okay, as you read this message this morning ...STOP. Stop and think about why you are here... here on this earth. Here with this family and friends... what is the true purpose and meaning of your life?

You are made up of years of daily experiences that have molded you into who you are today. Each experience gives you insight into the next days of your life. Think of each day as a building block strengthening you to become who you are. Your daily education is your experience... your life lessons you might say. From these experiences you live and hopefully you live a life with purpose and meaning. Do you?

God offers divine wisdom to all of us that are open to receive it. Struggling does not always have to be the process of life experience. Struggling makes us stronger, but I would guess if you were in line with the Lord on things, you would not struggle as much.

Look to those new experiences this day as you live and accomplish new achievements. May they be blessed today and in the future.

A Painting a Day: It started with the thought of grey blue and doing a quiet painting with maybe misty white horses advancing from the grey blue din behind. As you see it didn't pan out that way at all. Layers and layers of grey blue acrylic began the process with movements of violet dashing in and out. As the white layers came to play, it was evident it could not be a quiet painting as color seems to burst out of my work unplanned. Golden Acrylics and Liquitex Acrylics are both so thick and buttery... it almost makes it fun!
For those of you that love my work but the larger pieces are out of range, I have decide to do a series of smaller pieces that will be available at $100-150. Watch for them soon.

My Thought for the Day:

There is a point in biblical history where Israel is getting clobbered in battle by the Philistines and they are desperate to find a brave warrior to go up again the champion of this enemy. All of Israel's soldiers were terrified of fighting Goliath, the enemy's champion fighter. The man was huge. The man was a giant, thick with muscles and fighting skills beyond reason. David was the "chosen" to do this. David was not a warrior, but simply in the right place at the right time - God's time. He was armed with divine strength and knowledge as he consented to battle Goliath. Human strength could not compare to God's strength and power. David easily fell Goliath.

Each of us face "Goliath's" in our days. I have several things I am facing ahead that I know in my heart and my mind that I will be facing these issues with God leading the charge. I am confident. What I know in my heart, is the changes I hope for are NOT necessarily the changes that will occur. So as I prepare for the days upcoming and the battle ahead, I will do it with calm and prayer knowing the true battle belongs to God.

May your "Goliath's" fall easily today.

A Painting A Day: Contemporary Abstract Art, this painting embraces the contrast of color. Cool layers of blues were laid out on the canvas first, followed by the yellows. I knew the greens would emerge as the overlays began. The small accents of red and orange are like "spices" in your food. They bring out the movement of the composition accenting it just in balance to treat the eye and keep it exploring the painting. Golden Acrylics were used as paint; there was no impasto used...just thick paint.

A Painting A Day: Contemporary horses created with layers of palette knife paint, oils and impasto are apart of this painting. This was a commission piece for a very special doctors office opening here in Dallas. Color and energy are all apart of the healing process...waking the body to the "good news" of life through empathetic viewing, as energy passes from the canvas to the viewer.

My thoughts for the day:

The last time I was really sick was about a year ago in February when I had the flu and we had no heat, no hot water, and partial electricity. Go back and read my blogs from then. It was not a pretty thing. Terry would trot off to work as I laid in bed sick, with a space heater in my one little room. I was too sick to even get up to get myself water or food. He would literally leave me with a pitcher next to the bed. I was lacking hope at that time. Seems like when you are sick, that is one of the hardest times to have hope.

What is hope? Hope is defined as the ability to look forward with confidence or expectation.

Everyone needs hope in their life. Every day there are times we feel so hopeless that we cannot react to do anything. Despair begins to creep in. We begin to loose hope. In these economic times many of our friends have lost hope. Our days seem to be filled with hurts, problems, sicknesses, troubles, financial issues, world issues, political issues, bankruptcy etc. Can you rise above it?

Hope is real, and it is something we can give to another person. When you see someone in need suffering from hopelessness, it is time to share the greatness of God and the hope that Jesus offers to all of us. Hope is not something you can see or hear, but you can definitely feel it. Trust in Him. You will face disappointments many times in your life, but He will never disappoint you if you give Him the time to work in His way.

Remember as you pray today, "... those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31

Share a bit of "hope" with someone today....

A Painting A Day: Contemporary thrown in with a twist of abstract. Named In Search of the Bow... as the horses are running as if to find the source of the rainbow. The earth is very green after the rain. Thick areas of paint are layered and pulled across the surface. Painted with Holbein Duo Oils, this piece is pre-varnished with several coats of protection before it is shipped to you.

My thoughts for the day:

Have you ever run in a race before? If you were in grade school, every one lined up on a drawn mark on the ground and some one "adult-like" said "READY? Set. GO." and you ran with all your heart to the finish line. In high school and college, runners take their mark and you hear the crack of a gun as they take off on their run. Often the lead runner is a beginner who does not know how to pace themselves. They run out of steam half way through the race. The steady runner has the best chance of pacing themselves through the course to have the opportunity to stay vigilant and cross the finish line first.

Is your life a race? Are you giving your "All" every single day and wearing yourself out along the way? Will you be able to finish the race? How does God fit into all of this?

God has provided you with all you need in this lifetime. For some reason, me included, we seem to believe we want so many things that we work ourselves till there is not much life or time to live as we should be. We are running that race as fast as our legs will carry us. Terry and I made a commitment last night to stop our day sooner. I committed to try and be done in the studio by four every day ( after all I start at 5:30 am) and we will go walk together. When we get home we will share "tea-time" and bible time and then straight from heart talk time. We did it last night and shared things intimate to our hearts. We stopped "running" and spent time together with Him. Our goal will be to have less computers "running", less humans running, and less television. Our goal is more time in the bible, studying and spending time enjoying each other.

Are you giving only "token" time to God? Are you a Sunday church person and then running that race all week not spending time with Him? Does He give you your gifts as a token one day a week?

Let's pace ourselves today and rest up in Him.

A Painting A Day: From the movement of paint and the turning of light, I often have to step back from my thought of creation to allow an inner freedom to work across the canvas. Working with both Golden Acrylics and Liqutex Acrylics, I revel in the intensity of color as these hues spirit across the canvas. Ridges of paint begin to carve out what is there that the eye has not seen yet. Confirmation from a few strokes brings it to the front.

Saturday was a day to visit my dad. It is something you eagerly look forward to, you can't wait to see him, and you enjoy every moment you are with him...but when you leave you are exhausted. You often long for what was in the past, still struggling to accept what God has gifted you in your present earthly existence.

Today at church two young ladies will be confirmed into the church. They have spent close to a year in study and preparation for this decision. I remember the year I was confirmed. That was the spring it rained 40 days and forty nights here in Dallas and all the highways were closed down due to flooding. My dad always joked about getting a boat to go to church.

He is a man that lived his life with confidence and purpose. I knew at anytime day or night I could phone home and ask my dad something and he would always have an answer for me. 99% of the time it was the right answer. I always felt his presence as a sheltering protection in my life and trusted what he and mom would advise me to do.

Now in life there are these moments of clarity on things; you might say a sudden revelation from no where that is the perfect answer or solution to a problem at hand. A second thought follows immediately that I realized this is intuition kicking in. That same inner knowing I had about my Dad in my twenties and thirties has been replaced with maturity and a closer relationship with God. With age and experience comes the ability (When I use it) to get myself out of the way with my doubts and fears, and let His Spirit speak to me. I cannot possibly hear God if my inner thoughts are drowning out His gentle Spirit. My negative interference slows down everything...makes a "drag" you might say on forward progress.

Cut loose that "drag" today and replace those doubts; communicate with God. The Spirit will lead you in confidence and purpose.

A Painting A Day: Sometimes it is something as simple as a color that me me turn in hunger to pick up a palette knife. It might have been the gallon of white acrylic paint as I popped it open, or the evening light as it streamed through one west door in my studio casting gold across the room...what ever it was, it was God and it was good. This composition has several layers of Golden Acrylics scraped and moved with a palette knife. The final touches of accent colors and "spicing" in reds, turquoise and violet are unexpected treats. Painted on deep 2 inch canvas, this hangs with or with out a frame.

"But I will sing of your might; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been a fortress for me and a refuge in the day of my distress." Psalm 59:16

This morning is a morning I wake with joy and song in my soul. I can hear the birds outside and can already see the tints of early light breaking deep in the east. It is a full hug from the Father and a reminder that all is good with God. I am in tune with the nature around me and fully aware of His presence in this knowledge.

Affirm your blessings today. As you reflect on those special family members and their needs, also celebrate their blessings. Use song to express what lies inside...listen to the music that resonates in your heart.

We are hoping to see our grandson today and in the next few days we will see Terry's dad off for a veterans trip to Washington DC. Ben served in the air force and the navy. He is truly an exceptional man in his honor and love of God and of country. Please pray for these veterans as they make this honorary trip to the capital.

Nothing is the same every day. Nothing ever remains static as change is constant. With change is transition. Often with both of these may come fear or trepidation. It starts out with that funny uneasy feeling either generally flowing through out your body, or just upsetting your stomach.

I think we have to be prepared for change in the way you have to be open and accepting that it is happening all the time. Refocus yourself to a larger picture and take every new change as it comes, learning from it and welcoming it. God is apart of it, you can count on it. With every change and transition comes deeper knowledge from experience. Believe always in the best outcome and know that God is your guide.

Lauren was baptized yesterday. Here is a picture of my mom holding her in the family christening gown. More pictures to come after Natalie gets back to California!

Be open to change today and try to contribute to it in a positive manner.
